Department of Community Medicine

The primary goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in Community Medicine is to prepare them to function as first level physicians in the community, health care centres, hospitals and other health institutions in accordance with the institutional goals.

Students are exposed to all domains of Community Medicine which include concepts of health and disease, environmental health, epidemiology and maternal child health. Students are required to go through evidence based public health module during postings which exposes them to research topic formulation, research methodology and statistics. Aside from having the ability to describe and apply public health concepts on common public health issues, students are also expected to have the competency to conduct full research projects which should enable them to analyse and correlate factors under study with the outcome of interest.

In Family Medicine, students go through concepts and principles of primary care, further develop skills in history taking and physical examination, strengthen communication skills and acquire competencies in prevention, promotion and management in primary care settings.

Department of ENT

Otolaryngology (ENT) is taught to Undergraduates at Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) as part of the 2nd Phase of the MBBS curriculum. We aim to educate our students on the common disorders of the Ear, Nose and Throat they can expect to see and manage in their careers as House Officers and Medical Officers. The program offers enough breadth and detail to form a strong foundation for clinical knowledge in ENT regardless of the specialty that may eventually be chosen for specialization. The Department is staffed by three permanent lecturers with extensive clinical and teaching experience as well as by clinical staff from the attached Government Hospital with which the College is affiliated.

At the MMMC, ENT is taught as a mixture of didactic lectures, clinical case presentations, performance of clinical and procedural skills and presentations based on specific problems commonly encountered in clinical practice. We have a well-equipped Skills Lab where students can practice basic ENT procedures. Students are exposed to the operative environment as well and are encouraged to reflect on their experiences during their posting. Particular emphasis is laid on analysis of symptoms and a logical, evidence based approach to patient management. Soft skills such as communication, bedside manners and ethics form an integral part of the course.

Students are evaluated continuously as well as at the end of each semester in various aspects of the subject. The course is tailored and progresses from the basics to more advanced skills and knowledge while being relevant to basic hospital or General practice. Assessment is done in a variety of well validated and accepted norms of Medical Education in Malaysia and encompasses both theory and oral examinations.

At graduation, we aim to provide our students with a strong basis in ENT with which to build upon their skills and knowledge and help to foster attitudes of compassion, empathy and professionalism that are part of the armamentarium of any good doctor.

General/Internal Medicine (GIM) is an important of part of the curriculum in medical training. It is introduced in the 3rd year (5th semester) of the curriculum, in Manipal campus of the college, and continues over next 2 & a half years (6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th semester), in Melaka campus. It forms a substantial part of the curricula in the final 3 years of the total 5 years MBBS programme. Prof Dr Uduman Ali, heads the Department of Medicine, in Melaka campus, and Prof Dr Shashikiran Umakanth, heads the Department of Medicine, in Manipal campus of Melaka Manipal Medical College.

2 and a half years of clinical curriculum in Malaysian campus is divided into one year of clinical training in Muar campus, and 1 and half years in Melaka campus. Each campus has its own dedicated academic building and all the necessary infrastructure for training the students.

Training Hospitals utilised by Department of Medicine, Melaka campus of MMMC:

We post students in five hospitals in General/Internal Medicine:

  • Melaka General Hospital
  • Jasin Hospital
  • Alor Gajah Hospital
  • Muar General Hospital
  • Segamat Hospital

Students work in the hospital in small groups of 5 to 6. They are allotted beds in the medical wards in the mentioned hospitals, to work up cases independently. The clinical lecturer appointed by the college earmarks a certain number of cases for the clinical discussion for the day. Students on rotation present these cases to faculty from the college or hospital consultants. On specified days students are given cases to examine and present directly as short cases & we observe their clinical skills and guide them on appropriate corrections & improvements. The Clinical training includes Summary Rounds wherein they are taken round the ward and made to present the cases clerked by them during their daily ward work. As students will be in the ward for most part of the day they will be watching procedures being carried out, attend to haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and will be observing medical emergencies being managed in the ward. They have an opportunity of learning from medical officers and residents working in the respective wards. Management of the cases is also discussed in brief. They are posted in small numbers of 2–3 at CCU* for following rounds and learning [*CCU-Coronary Care Unit].

The department banks on various Teaching-Learning and Assessment (TLA) Methods:

We employ various Teaching and learning methods: lectures, long case & short case presentations, summary rounds, word work, summary rounds, skills lab training, e-learning, Portfolio, common programme, Problem-Based-Learning, Self-Directed Learning, student presentations, basic-sciences review,  and other innovative methods such as SCORPIO etc.

Assessments:

The assessment of the students is done systematically and at regular intervals by using both formative and summative assessment methodologies, ensuring that the students attain adequate knowledge, skills and right behaviour to practice medicine as Houseman

Both Formative and summative assessments are done to ensure that teaching is translated into learning. Each semester has Block test -1, Block test-2 comprising of MCQs, MEQs and End of Postings examination consisting of MCQs, MEQs, Short or Long cases and Portfolios.

This is apart from the examinations conducted by the college (P2S1, P2S2 and P2S3).

These examinations help students to plan & schedule their learning.

Department of Psychiatry

Overview

The Department of Psychiatry is one among the departments in the Faculty of Medicine in MMMC Melaka Campus.  The department’s objective is to provide adequate training in Psychiatry to our undergraduate medical students.  This is based on three principles:-

  • Psychiatry is part of medicine (Psychological Medicine)
  • Psychiatric knowledge, skills and attitudes are relevant to all medical doctors
  • Psychiatry is scientific, pragmatic and evidence-based like all other specialities.

Psychological problems and illness is estimated to occur between 15 to 20% of the general population.  In the hospital setting, psychological problems and illness are not confined only to the psychiatric wards but also to other wards such as medical, surgical, OBG, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and others.  The occurrence in non-psychiatric setting/wards often goes unrecognized with poor consequences to the patient.  Thus, it is important for our students to acquire clinical knowledge and skills with holistic clinical culture.

The aims of the Department of Psychiatry MMMC Melaka Campus are:-

  • To expose the students to the Malaysian psychiatric clinical scenario
  • To further enhance knowledge of psychiatry, introduced in Semester 5 (MMMC Manipal Campus)
  • To apply the knowledge and develop basic skills and comply with the clerkship methods in psychiatry and
  • To develop attitudes relevant to the multi-cultural and multi-religious Malaysia.

The department has 3 psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist  ( full-time) with vast teaching experience.  The hospital specialist are part time lecturers. During the 6/7 semester in the Muar campus, the students have a total of 33 didactic lectures with an end of lecture evaluation, which is part of the continuous assessment (CONASS).  From the 8 semester onwards, the students at the Melaka Campus, gain adequate knowledge and skills in Psychiatry through a number of teaching and learning methodologies.  The students interview, clerk and examine patients both at the assigned hospitals in Melaka and Muar.  They present these clerked clinical cases to the lectures for small group discussion.  They are exposed to the various common cases and also observe ward procedures and ward rounds by the hospital specialist and medical officers in both the wards and the follow-up clinics.  Other teaching and learning tools, in small groups are Problem-based learning (PBL), Tutorials, Role Play/Psycho-drama, Psychiatric Stimulation and Psychiatric Psycho Pathology (PPP).  Students prepare and present to their groups for discussion.  The students are to observe and learn from the hospital Urine Toxicology Unit, Methadone Clinic, Occupational Therapy Department and Electro-Convulsive Therapy procedures.  They make study visits to school for special children (Salvation Army) and follow the hospital staff for community care psychiatry (CPU).  Other learning methodologies and e-learning (moodle) and Self Directed Learning (SDL).

AS part of the CONASS, the students are evaluated regularly through both formative and summative assessment which is considered for their final university examination.  These assessments are to ensure that the students have attained sufficient knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and clinical acumen, when they graduated as medical doctor.

The department encourages the students to do research.  The department ensures that all the requirements of the qualifying agencies and regulatory bodies are met.
